Help tell your community’s story – become a Census Engagement Manager.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is now recruiting Census Engagement Managers for the 2021 Census. Seventy-five roles are available across the country in all states and territories.
Census Engagement Managers are specialised roles requiring a high degree of community interaction. Census Engagement Managers will be working within communities telling people about the Census and ensuring everyone can take part and get the help they need. Where possible, Census Engagement Managers will be recruited locally.
Census Engagement Managers contribute hugely to their community and Australia. They don’t just help the Census to collect and make statistics. They help Census data inform services for their community and build a better future for everyone.
The Census, held on 10 August 2021, is a snapshot of who we are and tells the story of how we are changing. It is one of the largest and most important statistical collections undertaken by the ABS.
Census data is used to inform important decisions including transport, schools, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and business. It also helps plan support and services for individuals, families and communities.
The data helps us meet the needs of our diverse population groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness.
Census data helps the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health plan medical clinics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The data informs the Royal Flying Doctors Service’s primary healthcare services in rural and remote Australia. And it’s used by Welcoming Australia to plan settlement and support services for refugees, people seeking asylum, and recently arrived migrants.
Census data is a primary source of information on homelessness. Combined with local knowledge, it informs initiatives for housing solutions that provide safe, long-term accommodation for rough sleepers.
Census Engagement Managers must have high level engagement and communication skills and experience working with diverse population groups. This includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and vulnerable populations, including people experiencing homelessness.
Census Engagement Manager’s will earn $53.21 per hour (inclusive of 25% loading), plus superannuation. Employment contracts are from 11 January 2021 until 31 October 2021. These are temporary, casual positions with variable working hours, including days, evenings and weekends.
Applications for Census Engagement Managers will open on 8 October 2020 and close on 5 November 2020. Applicants must be over the age of 18 and be an Australian citizen at the time of applying. (It is a general expectation that employees of the Australian Public Service are Australian citizens. In some circumstances this can be waivered).
