Communication Skills for Volunteers Interacting with Diverse Older People

A series of videos to help volunteers develop the skills needed to effectively interact with diverse individuals in aged care settings. Whether you wish to share with your existing volunteers, or use these videos as part of their induction, these videos will equip the volunteers at your organisation with the knowledge and strategies to provide high-quality, culturally-intelligent support to the diverse older adults they interact with. (AI Disclaimer: This video series uses an AI-generated presenter.)

1. How to Have Meaningful Conversations

In this video, we identify some common communication errors, and then we discuss techniques that make conversations better, in order to create safe and meaningful experiences for older individuals.

2. Communicating with Older Adults Who Are Hearing Impaired

Hearing loss is a common problem caused by loud noise, disease, and genetic variations. Many older adults are hearing impaired, and they may find it hard to have conversations with friends and family.

3. Understanding Trauma and Offering Support

In this video we’re focusing on trauma-informed care. This approach is essential when working with older adults, especially those from diverse backgrounds. It acknowledges that past traumatic experiences can have a lasting impact on someone’s well-being, and how to provide support in a safe, sensitive way.

4. Understanding Boundaries, Privacy & Reporting

This video discusses establishing healthy boundaries, respecting privacy, and knowing how to report any concerns. These practices ensure a safe and trusting environment where older adults, especially those from diverse backgrounds, feel comfortable and protected.

Enhancing Aged Care Services for Diverse Communities

MCCSA and The New Mainstream conducted a study on how culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities over 50 perceive and plan to access aged care services, revealing varying awareness levels and key barriers such as language difficulties and cultural expectations. The findings highlight the need for tailored, culturally competent approaches in aged care, including family-centered services, staff training, and diverse information channels to create a more inclusive system for Australia’s aging diverse population.
