Meet Tiah

Whether conducting my visits or attending meetings, I’ve been surrounded by like-minded people who gather to express their love for community.

– Tiah

My name is Tiah. I’m 21 years old, and I grew up in a small country town called Mildura. I moved to Adelaide about three years ago to study. My cultural background is Italian, and in Mildura, there’s a prominent Italian community. Many Italians migrated there after World War II, including my grandmother, Rosa. My grandmother encouraged me to learn Italian, and growing up with her, I felt a special connection when we spoke Italian together.

I saw MCCSA’s advertisement on Facebook at a time when I was actively seeking ways to become involved with the Italian community in Adelaide. Eager to show my commitment, I booked a meeting to discuss what the role entailed. I was thrilled to learn about the Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme (ACVVS) program, which is designed to offer social interaction to elderly people experiencing a sense of solitude. The program also provides opportunities to engage with a talented and culturally diverse community through our monthly educational meetings.

For my volunteering, I was fortunate to be matched with a very sweet lady, who lives in a nursing home close to me. Attending my fortnightly visits always feels like seeing my own grandmother, as I’m welcomed with open arms each time. I get excited for our catch-ups, knowing there’s always something to share – whether it’s photos, stories about myself and my family, or listening to her many invaluable life lessons. It has been a very rewarding experience, seeing someone who genuinely appreciates the visits, my company, and our shared love of the Italian language. It’s been amazing to develop such a special bond over the past several months.

MCCSA has provided me with an incredible opportunity to be positively involved in community life. Whether conducting my visits or attending meetings, I’ve been surrounded by like-minded people who gather to express their love for community. It has impacted me profoundly in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. After my weekend visits, I feel a great sense of satisfaction knowing that I’m doing something appreciated, and I find myself looking forward to my next visit. Being involved with the lovely team at MCCSA and the ACVVS program is irreplaceable time spent and a fantastic opportunity for those seeking to become involved in their community.
